Gender gaps in start-ups, innovation and inclusive growth in emerging market and developing countries
Code
GA22-31909S
Summary
Female entrepreneurship represents a significant, but still insufficiently utilized potential for creation of new firms, jobs and innovation. Cultural, economic, but also psychological barriers underpin the persistent and large gender gaps in entrepreneurial activities. Despite the interest among policymakers, rigorous research on such barriers in emerging market and developing economies is scarce, especially regarding gender differences in mindsets or social networks. Utilizing combination of qualitative and quantitative empirical methods, this project will contribute to closing this knowledge gap by generating new and robust evidence on drivers of gender differences in start-ups and innovation in emerging market and developing economies. Uncovering the role of personal traits and social networks in gender gaps in entrepreneurial entry and innovation will help identify the policies to improve women's labour market outcomes. The proposed study is thus of great relevance and has the potential to generate high quality academic publications.
